Abstract/Contents: | "A series of four experiments over a four year period examined the effectiveness of the nematicidal fumigant 1, 3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) at managing sting nematode (Belonolaimus longicaudatus Rau) on 'Tifdwarf' bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) putting greens. In two of the experiments an EC formulation was applied using high-pressure injection technology at 53 and 106 kg a.i. ha-1. The other two experiments used an SL formulation applied with slit-injection technology at 55 kg a.i. ha-1 only. Fenamiphos [Ethyl 3-methyl-4-(methylthio)phenyl(1-methylethyl)phosphoramidate] 10G at 112 kg ha-1 was included as an industry standard treatment in all experiments. Comparisons in sting nematode numbers, root lengths, and turf color and density were made between the nematicide treatments and untreated controls. 1,3-Dichloropropene reduced (P <0.05) numbers of sting nematode compared to untreated controls in 3 of 4 experiments and increased (P <0.1) root lengths in 2 of the 3 experiments where they were measured. The effects of 1,3-D on turf color and density varied among tests, but were positive (P <0.1) in many cases. Both of the injection technologies were acceptable regarding disruption of the playing surface. 1,3-Dichloropropene appears to be an effective method of reducing numbers of sting nematodes in soil, and improving turf health in infested bermudagrass putting greens." |
