Abstract/Contents: | "Poa annua (Annual meadowgrass) is considered one of the most problematic weeds in greenkeeping today. It produces large quantities of seed heads, which alone affect the playing quality of the green. It has the ability to thrive at the expense of desirable grass species especially in conditions of soil compaction, heavy wear, shade and excessive moisture. Greenkeepers have been seeking both chemical and cultural control methods for many years with very limited success. In a glasshouse experiment, both Agrostis stolonifera "Penn A4" and Poa annua seed were sown at rates of 5.0 g•m-2 and 18.0g•m-2 respectively on an 85% sand and 15% peat rootzone into commercial nursery trays (56 cm x 36 cm) under heated glass and natural light conditions. Each tray was divided in two to facilitate the sowing of the Agrostis seed on one side and the Poa seed on the other. The seedlings were fertigated using Kemira fertiliser twice monthly. Bispyribac-sodium was applied as a once off spray treatment at the following rates 22.7, 45.4, 68.1, 90.8, 113.5, and 136.2 g. a.i. ha-1 to determine the effects on Agrostis stolonifera seedling growth and Poa annua seedling control. Bispyribac-sodium showed no selectivity between seedling Poa annua and Agrostis stolonifera. The chemical reduced both fresh and dry weights in both grass genera. Discolouration of both grass species occurred which appeared to be directly related to the amount of active ingredient applied. At the highest application rate (136.2 g. a.i. ha-1) it killed the seedling Agrostis." |
