Abstract/Contents:The introduction of washed, soil-less sod for establishing Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) turf offers some distinct advantages over conventional, unwashed sods including lighter weight of the sod rolls and elimination of the foreign soil layer within the sod at the transplant site. Studies were undertaken to determine the comparative rooting and moisture retention of washed and unwashed, muck-grown 'A-20' Kentucky bluegrass sods as affected by different climatic and soil conditions. Results showed that washed sod rooted faster than unwashed sod under the moderate temperatures of mid-spring, but that the washed sod was more prone to desiccation injury during mid-summer stress conditions. In spring, washed sod rooted faster in sand than in a Flanagan silt loam (Aquic Argiudoll) soil. However, in the summer greater sod rooting strength was measured on soil than on a sand planting medium. Unwashed sod was twice as heavy and retained substantially more water at saturation compared to washed sod.
