Abstract/Contents:"A study was made on four grass sportsfields to determine whether there is incompatibility between the high bulk density of the root zone which is needed to give a soil strength adequate for good playing conditions and the amount of air in the soil which is necessary for grass growth. Soil air was measured in terms of the oxygen diffusion rate (ODR) and the oxygen concentration in the soil gas phase. The measurements were made during part of the 1974/1975 playing season and the entire 1975/1976 season, two winter periods with very different precipitation. The measured ODR and oxygen concentrations were compared with values mentioned in the literature as limited grass growth. Such values were temporarily reached in the wet conditions of 1974/1975, especially on the most compacted plots, but during the 1975/1976 playing season no limiting values were obtained. Despite quite different soil air conditions in the same field in consecutive seasons or in different fields in the same season, there was little variation in sward development. The possibly unfavorable effect of high rootzone density on soil air is greatly outweighed by the direct effects of play itself."
