| Abstract/Contents: | States that "population growth and changing dietary habits have led to an increased demand for protein for human consumption." Discusses nitrogen fixation in C-3 and C-4 grasses including sugar cane, Digitaria decumbens, wheat, grain, rice, and other forage crops. States that "nitrogen-fixing bacteria which have been found in association with grasses are all capable of fixing nitrogen in soil or culture medium without the plant" and discusses the bacteriology of Beijerinkckia, Azotobacter paspali, and Spirillum lipoferum. Also describes the taxonomy, physiology, and ecological distribution of these species. Discusses the inoculation of grasses with Spirillum lipferum as well as culture techniques and identification. Describes seasonal and diurnal flucuations and other factors affecting nitrogen fixation in grasses, including plant genotype, temperature, oxygen sensitivity, and high levels of combined nitrogen. Concludes that grass-bacteria associations "are contributing significantly to the N economy of the plants." |
