Abstract/Contents: | Traces the history of golf course architects since the late 1800s and describes how immigration from Europe to the United States influenced golf designers. States that "golf architecture had long been considered an art form, but now with difficult sites, higher costs, expensive elaborate and, of necessity, demanding design and turfgrass maintenance objectives, two new components - the engineering discipline and agronomic science - demanded attention and knowledge." Predicts that "it will become harder to produce truly original, or even a remarkably dissimilar course as social pressures and restrictions increase." |
