Abstract/Contents:"Limited information exists concerning macronutrient concentrations in turfgrass clippings and soil water under turf. This study was to determine (1) macronutrient concentrations in Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) + fine fescue (Festuca rubra L.) clippings and in the soil water 0.61 m below soil surface; (2) concentration fluctuations from July through November, and (3) effects of Tee Time (25-3-10), Miracle Grow (36-6-6), and a yeast-added bio fertilizer (0-6-0) on turfgrass quality, clipping yield, and macronutrient concentrations in clippings and soil water. Six treatments were: (1) no fertilizer; (2) Tee Time; (3) Miracle Gro, both applied at 2.4 g N m-2 each month; and (4) Bio Fertilizer (39.1 g fertilizer m-2) + Tee Time (1.5g N m-2), (5) Bio Fertilizer (39.1 g fertilizer m-2) + Miracle Gro (1.5 g N m-2), and (6) Bio Fertilizer (48.9g fertilizer m-2) + Tee Time (2.2 g N m-2), the latter three applied in July and October. The treatments significantly affected turfgrass quality, clipping yield, and clipping and soil water [N] from July through October; clipping [K] in September and October; soil water [K] in August and September; clipping [Mg] in Sep; but not clipping and soil water [P] and [Ca], and soil water [S]. Significant monthly fluctuations occurred in the concentrations of most of the elements in turfgrass clippings and soil water. Tee Time and Miracle Gro applied each month improved turfgrass growth and clipping yield, but they also had a higher risk of nitrate contamination of groundwater, compared to the bio fertilizer that contained no N but some yeasts capable of fixing atmospheric N."
