Abstract/Contents:"The effects of different base layers were evaluated for four cricket loam soils over a variety of construction profiles. The construction profiles varied primarily in terms of the type and depth of cricket loam soil and the presence or absence of an underlying gravel layer. The soil type forming the surface layer of the pitch profile had by far the greatest effects on soil characteristics and playing performance, but a number of effects of the base layers were recorded. For some profiles in particular, the composition of the base layer could influence the moisture content of the upper 40 mm of the soil, and this in turn affected cracking patterns, hardness and ball rebound. There was some evidence that the presence of a more moisture-retentive soil within the base layer was associated with higher organic matter content in the overlying soil. This also had potential influence on bulk density, hardness and ball rebound."
