Abstract/Contents:"Golf greens are complex ecological systems whose overall performance is greatly controlled by their rootzone physical, sward and playing quality characteristics. Their performance also changes with age, maintenance and usage. This makes it very difficult to carry out long term comprehensive assessments or dynamic monitoring of golf green performance by means of conventional methods that measure a small number of factors under only static conditions. However, an Integrated Rate Methodology could be adopted and modified to build a system analysis model for this purpose. This modeling approach has the potential to provide an objective, quantitative, comprehensive and dynamic tool for assessing and monitoring golf green performance through computing a single quantitative Comprehensive Golf Green Performance Index (CGGPI). A conceptual approach for building an Integrated Rate Methodology model is outlined, and steps for computing the CGGPI from its three conceptual sub-model structures (Rootzone, Sward and Playing Quality) are described. The model application is demonstrated briefly based on a field trial carried out under New Zealand conditions, and the potential application of the modeling approach in performance benchmarking and decision-making for golf green management is illustrated."
