Abstract/Contents:"Information on organic matter levels from a range of sand-based golf greens from throughout New Zealand was collected and analysed. Some sites were monitored over time to evaluate the temporal changes occurring with organic matter content. At other sites infiltration rate and soil porosity data was collected in order to draw correlation with the organic matter level. Results showed that the majority of greens evaluated had surface organic matter levels well in excess of internationally recommended values (mean of 8.2% and 4.7% for the 0-20 mm and 20-40 mm rootzone depths, respectively). The build up of organic matter in the surface 20 mm occurred relatively quickly in newly constructed greens and levels deemed to be excessive could be reached within the initial year or two. The build up at the lower depths was slower, with the threshold levels typically not reached until the 6th to the 7th year after construction. Analysis from several sites showed a strong correlation between organic matter level and infiltration rate decline (r=0.89, P<0.001). Coupling the results with field observations from NZ Sports Turf Institute Agronomists, it is recommended that a target upper level for rootzone organic matter in sand-based golf greens in New Zealand be set to 6.0%, 4.0% and 3.0% for the 0-20 mm, 20-40 mm and 40-80 mm depths, respectively. Only a small proportion of greens in the study met this recommended threshold, suggesting a more vigorous physical treatment programme needs to be used. The study demonstrates that the routine testing and monitoring of organic matter content in golf turf rootzones represents a useful tool to help identify inherent problems and to aid the planning of the organic matter (thatch) control programme."
