Abstract/Contents:"The physical properties of golf green rootzone mixes made with recycled glass-derived sand were compared with similar mixes based on conventional natural sand and mixes which contained a 50:50 mix of both glass-derived sand and conventional sand. Medium-fine, medium and medium coarse sands were combined with peat in the ratios of 75:25 and 85:15 sand:peat (v/v) to prepare rootzone mixes for standard laboratory rootzone testing of physical properties. The glass-derived sand rootzone mixes had in most cases, significantly greater total porosity, air-filled porosity and hydraulic conductivity than the conventional sand mixes and significantly lower bulk density and capillary porosity than the conventional sand mixes. These results were probably an effect of the increased angularity of the glass-derived sands and its effect on inter-particle friction and inter-packing. Rootzone mixes could be made using glass-derived sands and mixes of glass-derived and conventional sands which were within the range of physical properties recommended by the USGA (total porosity: 35-55%, air-filled porosity: 15-30%, capillary porosity: 15-25% and saturated hydraulic conductivity: >150mm h-1). The results depended on the grade of sand and the type and concentration of organic amendment."
