Abstract/Contents:"Golf greens commonly consist of about 300 mm of a sandy rootzone mix overlying about 100 mm of gravel. The layered system allows rapid drainage of water from the green while serving to increase the amount of water stored within the rootzone. For the system to function properly, selection of specific sand and gravel sizes are important. The USGA recommends that the ratio of the coarsest 15% of the rootzone material to the finest 15% of the gravel layer be 8 or less. The ratio was increased from a more restrictive 5 to the current value of 8 in 2004 (USGA, 2004). This study was undertaken to evaluate the bridging factor in sand-gravel systems. Laboratory columns were saturated and allowed to drain. The equivalent depth of water retained within a column was determined as a function of the sand-gravel bridging factor. We could establish no relationship between water retained in 300 mm of sand for briding factors ranging from 2 to 15. Our data would suggest that maintaining a bridging factor of 8 or less is not necessary for maximum water retention within the sand layer."
