Abstract/Contents:The summer performance of numerous cultivars of cool-season grass species was studied at Lusignan during three summers of severe stress, each different: 1) drought (1974), 2) heat (1975), and 3) drought and heat (1976). While F. rubra litoralis and F. ovina duriuscula have the most satisfactory appearance in a period of drought, provided it does not last too long, F. arundinacea is by far the best in extreme heat. L. perenne shows an outstanding ability to green up again when water is available once more. From assessments in 1976 throughout France on trials laid down in 1974 it is possible, in spite of significant species x site interactions and clear differences between cultivars, to rank the species for mean summer performance: F. arundinacea > F. ovina duriuscula > P. pratensis, L. perenne > A. tenuis, P. bertolonii, A. stolonifera, F. rubra > A. canina, F. ovina tenuifolia. There are differences between cultivars, and age of plants affects the absolute values. Among the warm-season species in the trials, only C. dactylon is of interest.
