Abstract/Contents: | "Field studies were conducted in 2000 and 2001 to evaluate the response of thirteen Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) cultivars to preemergence herbicides commonly used to control summer annual grassy weeds. Bensulide, O,O-bis(1-methylethyl) S-[2-[(phenylsulfonyl)amino]ethyl]phosphorodithioate, dithiopyr, S,S-dimethyl 2-(difluoromethyl)-4-(2 methylpropyl)-6-(trifluoromethyl)-3,5-pyridinedicarbothioate oxadiazon, 3-[2,4-dichloro-5-(1-methylethoxy)phenyl]-5-(1,1-dimethyle< >thyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-(3H)-one, prodiamine, 2,4 dinitro-N3,N3-dipropyl-6-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-ben< >zenediamine pendimethalin, N-(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine, and a combination of benefin N-butyl-N-ethyl-2,6-dinitro-4-(trifluoromethyl)ben< >zenamine and trifluralin 2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzen< >amine were applied in early spring at one and two times the recommended use rate to Kentucky bluegrass cultivars which were established from seed the previous fall. The highest degree of herbicide injury was evident two months after treatment in the form of ground cover (GC) reductions relative to untreated plots. All herbicides, except pendimethalin, had no adverse effect on the GC of any Kentucky bluegrass cultivar when applied at the recommended application rate. However, when these herbicides were applied at twice the recommended application rate, the GC of several cultivars, most notably 'Alpine' and 'Northstar', was reduced. Pendimethalin at 3.4 kg ha-1 reduced GC of several cultivars, especially 'Alpine', 'Northstar', and 'Cache'. Pendimethalin at 6.8 kg ha-1 reduced GC of all cultivars in both years with the exception of 'Preakness' in 2001. Although Kentucky bluegrass cultivars varied in their response to preemergence herbicides there was no evidence that cultivars within the same classification type responded similarily. The use of pendimethalin should not be recommended on any Kentucky bluegrass cultivar or cultivar blend in the first year of establishment." |
