Abstract/Contents: | Profiles the "Thumpmeter," "a complex device that measures the firmness of fairways and putting surfaces." States that "the Thumpmeter consists of a laptop and what looks like a bicycle pump but actually is a 3-foot-long cylinder. Inside the metal tube is a spherical metal object that slides down and makes an impression on the turf surface. The laptop records the depth of the resulting indentation, as well as the firmness of the surface rebound." Also states that "the meaning of any numbers will only gain significance with the accumulation of a larger database that will allow for comparisons across various types of greens, whether soil-based or sand-based, and by various types of turf." |
