Abstract/Contents:"Seeded cultivars of zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) are being rapidly developed and introduced to the turfgrass market. With the increased use of seeded cultivars, there is a need to understand the types of herbicides that can be safely used during the establishment period. The objective of this study was to determine the tolerance of seedling zoysiagrass to a range of postemergence herbicides. Herbicide treatments were applied at 2 weeks after emergence and included fenoxaprop + triclopyr + clopyralid, metsulfuron + MSMA, triclopyr + clopyralid + MSMA, flazasulfuron + MSMA, foramsulfuron + MSMA, trifloxysulfuron-sodium + MSMA, quinclorac + MSMA, clopyralid + MSMA, 2,4-D + dicamba + mecoprop + MSMA, and quinclorac. Herbicide injury and turfgrass coverage rates were monitored for 4 weeks after treatment. Treatments that caused significant injury to the seedling turf included fenoxaprop + triclopyr + clopyralid and metsulfuron + MSMA. Most of the herbicide combinations tested in these trials caused some level of turfgrass injury, but this injury was generally short-lived and did not significantly reduce the rate of turfgrass coverage. The herbicides that caused the least amount of injury to zoysiagrass seedlings included quinclorac, 2,4-D + dicamba + mecoprop + MSMA, and triclopyr + clopyralid + MSMA."
