Abstract/Contents:Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) is a vigorously growing plant which can seriously reduce the quality of infested turfs. The purpose of these investigations was to determine the effects of cultural practices, including mowing and fertilization, on the population dynamics of yellow nutsedge in competition with Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). In greenhouse and field studies, yellow nutsedge plants from tubers were planted alone or in combination with Kentucky bluegrass in an Aquic Arguidoll (Flanagan silt loam) soil. Results from the greenhouse experiment showed that yellow nutsedge was well adapted to regular mowing and could spread rapidly in a turf under conditions existing during the summer months. Factors that restricted its spread in field turf included, increased mowing height and optimum fertilization which enhanced the competitive ability of Kentucky bluegrass. With high levels of nitrogen fertilization (100 kg N/ha/growing month), the incidence of Fusarium blight (Fusarium roseum (Lk.) Snyd. and Hans, f. sp. cerealis (Lk.) Snyd. and Hans.) disease reduced turfgrass competition and allowed rapid increases of the yellow nutsedge population.
