Abstract/Contents:SUMMARY: "This article deals in particular with the planning aspects of this subject. Two examples are given to elaborate the different planning levels. After a brief explanation of terms in relation to the turf grounds in question and the legal aspects it is shown in which manner, at an already early stage, the environmental compatibility of the project can be tested. A sports ground planned in the water protection zone II serves as an example to demonstrate the methodical procedure. Possible effects are elaborated in particular, which whould be avoided or balanced throught the application of appropriate measures or from which the ground water has to be protected. The second example, a golf link in water protection zones II and I, is somewhat more pragmatically located, one planning level lower. Here, concrete measures, which have moreover been visualized in drawings, are more closely regarded. The new findings relating to nitrate reduction through bark mulch are also elucidated. Towards the end of the article, the consequences and requirements relating to turf grounds in water protection zones are specified." Using the laws as they exist in the Federal Republic of Germany as a departure point, means of enforcing the laws while a project is still in its planning stages are discussed. Furthermore, it is the intensity of use and the kinds of grass that are present upon a site that should determine the amounts of fertilizers used, and this should give rise to the issue of how best to apply the fertilizers without harming the surrounding protected zone.
