Abstract/Contents:"Zoysia (Zoysia japonica Steud.) is a desirable warm-season turfgrass, but has dormant seed. Establishment from seed at low temperatures would be desirable. The objectives of this research were to determine the nature of that dormancy and to provide insight for its reduction. During germination, the coleoptile consistently emerged earlier than the radicle. In petri dish assays in light at 22°C, caryopses (glume and lemma removed) germinated earlier and more rapidly than seeds that had the basal or distal ends removed. Final germination was 70, 90 and 65%, respectively, compared with 2% for intact seeds. A water extract from intact seeds reduced final germination of base-cut seeds to 18%, while germination of caryopses (78%) was similar to the water control. Intact seeds, after soaking in water for 4 days, had higher germination (25%) than non-soaked seeds (5%), confirming a water-soluble inhibitor likely existed in the glume and/or lemma. After 90 days at 5°C, scarification with 5.4 M KOH for 15 min increased germination at 22°C from 55% to near 95%, a percentage similar to both KOH-treated and control seeds at 35/20°C. Cold storage and KOH treatments both appear to reduce seed dormany and improve germination at lower temperatures."
