Abstract/Contents: | Describes sustainable greenkeeping principles and lists the basic BIG SIX principles: "minimal water, minimal fertiliser, plenty of aeration, plenty of top dressing, optimise the growing environment, [and] implement sustainable surface refinement." Emphasizes the importance of these principles in maintaining putting green surfaces that are "firm underfoot and refined to enable the ball to roll fast, smooth and true." States "one of the most common resasons for failure is attributable to unfortunate and unnecessary interference/influence from the golfers." Cites a case study of sustainable greenkeeping at Glencorse Golf Club near Edinburgh and states that the study, using sustainable maintenance program, has seen "a dramatic reduction in disease incidence and far less winter closure." Concludes that "clubs who adopt these principles [of sustainable maintenance] will be minimising the effect of these future challenges on putting surface production and ultimately providing better turf for golf." |
