| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the affect of wear on sports pitches and the factors that influence the amount of wear caused by game play which include soil type, rainfall and drainage, sward health and rooting, sward type, and root depth. Offers suggestions for increasing wear tolerance on a sports pitch. Concludes that "as a pitch design matures then it will be able to cope with an increasing level of play up to the first plateau. The level of play is then limited by the existing level of maintenance. If a new successful maintenance practice is adopted, then an additional level of play may be achieved. Ultimately, however, there will be a limit, beyond which the natural turf surface will not be able to pass." |
