Abstract/Contents:Discusses a study conducted to "determine seasonal wear tolerance and recovery among Kentucky bluegrass cultivars." States that "wear was applied to Kentucky bluegrass cultivars using a modified Sweepster in 2004 and 2005. Sixteen passes of a wear simulator were applied per week over a six-week period (96 total passes) for each season (spring [April-May], summer [July-August], and fall [October-November])." Describes the rating scale of the study, stating that "turfgrass performance was assessed visually utilizing a 1-9 scale (9=best performance). Fullness of turfgrass cover was also visually rated on a 0-100% scale (0%=complete defoliation of turfgrass cover; 100% full turfgrass canopy) [and] cores (surface area=8.0 cm2) were sampled from nine Kentucky bluegrass Types immediately after wear treatment." Lists the cultivars used in the experiment: 'Princeton 105,' 'Midnight,' 'Langara,' 'Jefferson,' 'Julia,' 'Brooklawn,' 'Cabernet,' 'Coventry,' and 'Touchdown.' Results include that "cultivar response to wear differed; however, the relative differences among cultivars was dependent on the season of wear. For example, the loss of verdure after wear varied among cultivars for spring and summer wear but there were no differences among cultivars for fall wear treatment." Concludes that "results from the complete data analysis are expected to provide the basis for season-specific Kentucky bluegrass cultivar recommendations for sports turf."
