| Abstract/Contents: | "New turf-type buffalograss developed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are vegetatively propagated by plugging. A person is able to lift only an average of 300 plugs/h with a manual plugging device. To increase the plugging capacity and reduce the labor input, tines for a mechanical plugger were developed. A Ryan GA 30 aerator, used as the mechanical actuator, was retrofitted with the plugging tines to lift buffalograss plugs. Four plugging tines (conical, wedge, cylindrical, and cylindrical taper tines) were evaluated in buffalograss turf at three soil moisture regimens (16, 24, and 28% d.b.). The conical tine performed the best, achieving a maximum plugging efficiency of more than 90%, in a soil moisture range of 16 to 24% d.b. Plugging capacity, with four conical tines mounted on the actuator, was calculated to be 38,880 plugs/h at a 90% plugging efficiency. This improves the plugging capacity, 130 times over manual plugging." |
