| Abstract/Contents: | "Dr. B. J. Johnson initiated a series of experiments in Georgia to improve the consistency of postemergence control of weeds in dormant bermudagrass turf using selected tank-mixed herbicides. The average performance over several years for tank mixtures of paraquat or glyphosate with atrazine or simazine or paraquat with metribuzin consistently controlled more weeds than any of these herbicides applied alone. Two applications of all of the herbicides used in this study would adequately control almost all winter annual weeds. However, Dr. Johnson listed several advantages for a single applications of tank-mixed herbicides: 1) weather conditions during January and February may not always be favorable for two applications at a two-week interval, 2) eliminating the second application reduces labor costs, 3) paraquat or glyphosate treatments must be applied on dormant bermuda, 4) a single herbicide application is part of most lawn care schedules. In addition, when treatments were applied at low temperatures during the winter, weeds were killed faster from the tank-mixture of paraquat and other herbicides than when they were treated with atrazine, simazine, or metribuzine alone. The earlier reduction of winter annual weeds decreased weed competition and helped increase turfgrass quality." |
