Abstract/Contents: | Defines a weed as "a green plant growing in the wrong place at the wrong time." Explains how to identify weeds and prevent them from growing in turf using established methods. Suggests that frequent mowing is a way to maintain a high quality turf, however "other types of weed plant including rushes, sedges and mosses have low positioned growing points and like grasses escape the mower's blade." States that "plants with the means to propagate vegetatively, as well as by seeds, pose particular problems in turf weed control." Discusses the use of chemical weed control as a selective weedkiller and describes how herbicides have evolved of a period of time. Concludes that "failure to clean up debris including leaves, twigs and fallen fruit from ornamental trees such as those of the family Rosacea - flowering crab apple (Malus floribunda and M lemoinei), cherry plum (Prunus cerasifera) and ornamental pear (Pyrus sp) - is also a recipe for weed invasion." |
