Abstract/Contents:Studies were carried out in Louisiana in 1980-81 to correlate absolute populaiton estimates of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) with sweep sampling and yield in Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon ). Regression analysis of larvae per m2 (x) against larvae per net sweep (y) resulted in equations of y = 0.03x + 0.40 (r2 = 0.86) and y = 0.08x - 0.10 (r2 = 0.68) in Bermudagrass 2-15 and more than 15 cm high, respectively. Significantly more larvae were captured by sweep-net from 14.00 to 15.00 h than from 10.00 to 11.00 or 18.30 to 19.30 h. Regression analysis of larvae per square metre against alicia Bermudagrass yield in field-cage tests indicated that 6th-instar larvae reduced yield by 436 mg per larva and 3rd- to 6th-instar larvae by 828 mg per larva. Under 1982 market conditions, the economic injury level for S. frugiperda on alicia Bermudagrass in the state was 0.67 3rd- to 6th-instar larvae per sweep in grass 2-15 cm high sampled at 14.00 to 15.00 h.
