Abstract/Contents:Discusses "lack of any long-term turf trials anywhere in [Australia]" and the creation of programs at the Sydney Plant Breeding Institute and the Department of Primary Industries at Cleveland in Queensland to remedy the situation. Discusses "long-term plots (that unfortunately no longer exist) at the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) at Bingley in the United Kingdom." States that the plots showed "considerable species change within the cool season grasses present and under putting green conditions." Suggests that the changes "could be viewed as a desirable outcome, overall production increases, carrying capacity increases, income increases...[but] from an environmental view, this long-term experiment has demonstrated the destruction of a huge number of diverse plants within some of the treatments in place." Discusses studies that "have taken place to determine if a lack of plant biodiversity has an influence on other organisms and the answer is it does and this can be substantial." Explains that "as diversity reduces, there is a reduction of beneficial organisms that aid in the reduction of damaging insect populations." States that "within turf communities there are many questions that remain unanswered: should we be investigating the long-term implications of bentgrass mixes on putting greens? Do they cope with fungal infections better than single strain sowings?" Concludes that "the examples that continue to provide invaluable information, such as those from the Rothamsted Park Grass experiment, highlight the gaps that need to be filled within the turf industry."
