Abstract/Contents: | Provides a letter responding to another subscriber letter stating that "the means of detecting the poison sumac, given in your February [1903] number...is misleading." States that only two points were given to identify poison sumac but there are actually many more. States that "the number of leaflets varies from seven to thirteen, and another and harmless kind of sumac, and the one a non-botanist is most likely to confuse with the poison one, sometimes has nine (nine to twenty-one)." Provides the rule of safety "stated...as follows: If the leaves are of three leaflets, it maybe be poison ivy. If they have more than three, the margins must be toothed, or the stem between leaflets must be winged." |
