Abstract/Contents:Responds to the question "Does it really pay to cover putting greens for the winter?" States that "there are probably many instances in which a winter covering might be of benefit, but it seems very doubtful whether any such distinct and decisive benefits accrue as warrant the expense. For it is an expense indeed if the greens are to be treated in such manner that they are really protected by the covering, and unless the covering really protects, the Green Committe has wasted some of the club's cash very uselessly." Discusses the disadvantages of covering the green, stating that covering "is...not intended to prevent the greens from freezing. It only mitigates the severity of the frost." Describes the consequences of using some types of covering and states that "if you must use a covering, use tobacco stems" because "they are easy to put on evenly, and after they are once wet they stay in place." Emphasizes the importance of watching the turf carefully in the spring, stating "don't let that sickly yellow growth get started by failing to remove the covering in time, or you will have a rank growth of coarse grass utterly unsuited to a putting green."
