Abstract/Contents: | OBJECTIVES: "Salt-affected soils are a problem not only in arid regions but also on irrigated lands. In the United States alone 5 million hectares of irrigated land have been estimated to be salt-affected. A recent survey indicates that as much as one-third of all irrigated lands in the world may be plagued by salt problems. Increasing levels of soluble salts in many of our Florida wells combined with high evapotranspiration rates through most of the year provide conditions characteristic of salt-affected soils. Since irrigation is required for high quality ornamental turf in Florida, salinity problems are increasing accordingly. The purpose of this study was to document the relative salt toelrance of four St. Augustinegrass cultivars and to explore their physiological basis." |
