Abstract/Contents:Reviews why a December, 1983 freeze caused such severe plant damage, how the plants responded, what can be done in the future to minimize damage, and how reseeding should be handled. When the temperature fell from 60 F to 15 F minimum air temp. within 24 hours, the turfgrass did not have sufficient time to acclimate and thus suffered from severe shock. Cold tolerance of turfgrasses depends on 1) soil type, 2) soil moisture, 3) relative humidity, 4) season of growth, 5) turgicity of tissue, and 6) nutritional status. Micro climate also influences the turfgrass environment. Each turfgrass species has three cardinal temperature points, one of which is the minimal survival temperature. The direct low temperature injury is the result of the freezing process. The ice crystal formation in the intercelluler tissues cause desiccation and also mechanically disrupts cell membranes. The more rapid the freezing, the higher the killing temperature. Excessive nitrogen reduces plant cold-hardiness because it stimulates growth causing hydration of tissue and a decrease in carbohydrate levels. Maintaining adequate levels of K and P is critical. The mowing height should be increased so as to buffer any excessive environmental pressures. If reseeding is necessary, minimize preparation on the green and mowing without a basket is suggested until seed germination. [DL]
