Annotation from Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf, by James B Beard, Harriet J. Beard and James C Beard:"A pioneering booklet on the establishment and culture of turfgrasses for sport and recreational uses for the military in the United Kingdom. It encompasses cricket pitches and grounds, tennis courts, bowling greens, golf courses, and track & field facilities. The approach then used on soccer fields was as follows:

Football pitches are a problem at this time, especially those situated on heavy ground, and badly drained. Every attempt should be made to avoid overplay under wet conditions; if it is necessary to roll for further play after the ground has been badly cut up, and before it has had time to dry out thoroughly, then it is advisable to spike-roll and lightly harrow, before rolling. If available, a dressing of sand should be put on the goal areas, or wet patches, before rolling." p. 149
Beard Section Heading:Bibliography of books/monographs on turfgrass culture
Beard Special Note:Identified by James B Beard in Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf (2014) as being old and rare based on his experience.
