Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted to determine "if generalities underlie arthropod response to polyculture or if these responses are idiosyncratic, depending on the particular combination of plants and arthropods." Suggests that "herbivore response to polycultures will be determined by natural enemies, resource concentration, or both...Generalist predators and parasitoids should be more abundant in polycultures than monocultures because (a) they switch and feed on the greater variety of herbivores that become available in polycultures at different times during the growing season"; "(b) they maintain reproduction populations in polycultures while in monocultures only males of some parasitoids are produced"; and "(c) they can utilize hosts in polycultures that they would normally not encounter and use in monocultures." Details methods and materials used in the study. Reports that "of the nine populations of sequential polyphages...reviewed...seven were more abundant and only one was less abundant in polycultures than in monocultures on the second host."
