Abstract/Contents:"Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) was evaluated as a tool for detecting wetting front movement in a sandy soil. GPR images of the field site were produced at six transects before and after irrigations. Application uniformity was carefully monitored and application uniformity curves were created for each of the transects. The radar images reliably detected wetting front movement in the soil profile and the wetting front shapes markedly resembled the application uniformity curves. Water content data obtained from soil samples supported the wetting front movement observed on the GPR charts. Statistical analysis showed a link between the GPR reflection bands and the wetting front as identified by the water content measurements. The technique evaluated by the study may be useful in identifying paths for preferential flow at a given field site."
