Abstract/Contents:"Forty-eight Kentucky bluegrass, Poa pralensis L., cultivars were screened for resistance to a Mary land form of the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) in seedling tests. All cultivars as a whole were highly susceptible, but individual plants were found in 36 cultivars that demonstrated moderate to high levels of antibiosis or tolerance in the seedling test and in subsequent small cage tests. The frequency of resistant plants in the 36 cultivars varied from less than 0.1 to 7.1%. Cultivars with 1% or more resistant plants included 'A-34', 'Adelphi', 'Kenblue', 'Piedmont', 'Rugby', 'Sydsport', and 'Troy'. Approximately one-fourth of the selections also were tested for resistance to greenbugs collected from turfgrass in Ohio. Twenty-one plants selected from 'A-34', 'Adelphi', 'Argyle', 'Bonnieblue', 'Cougar', 'Delta', and 'Kenblue' demonstrated comparable levels of resistance to greenbugs from Maryland and Ohio. Ohio greenbugs generally caused more severe feeding injury on susceptible plants than did the Maryland form. Maryland greenbugs developed well on Kentucky bluegrass and barley, Hordeum vulgare L., while Ohio greenbugs developed well only on Kentucky bluegrass."
