States that "the first zero-turn mowers were chain-drive mowers...although they were functional, the maintenance cost was high, they didn't wear well and they weren't reliable." Mentions the development of independent suspension which "can protect the machine from abuse and increase operator comfort." Also mentions "designs incorporating a low center of gravity and even weight distribution [as] key advancements for ease of use." Discusses safety precautions taken when developing these mowers, including Roll Over Protection System (ROPS), stating that "certified to OSHA [Occupational Safety and Health Administration] standards, ROPS have proven successful in preventing injury." Concludes that "for day-to-day practical use...contractors should stick to the basics...because gimmicks normally complicate a piece of equipment." |
