Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the emergence of turfgrass growth regulators, stating that "interest in using growth reulators for turf management began after WW [World War] II...The objective at the time was to reduce mowing requirements." States that "during the 1970s...turf growth retardants became available which promised less phytotoxicity than [previous] chemistry." Describes the process of gibberellic acid inhibitors, explaining that "paclobutrazol, and the chemically-similar flurprimidol, reduce vertical turf growth without generally reducing tillering or other development." Mentions that "during the mid to late 1990s, turf managers who had never used PGRs [plant growth regulators] before began relying on Primo." Discusses ethephon, "a unique type of PGR [that] was released for turf management." States that ethephon is unique among turf growth regulators as the chemical, 2-chloroethyl phosphoric acid, is metabolized by plants to form ethylene gas." Suggests potential application times for PGRs. |
