Abstract/Contents: | Discusses turf maintenance on horse racing tracks. States that "during the 2005-2006 jump racing season there were some high profile tendon injuries to horses and this prompted comment and a debate with regard to the condition of the ground on...racecourses as well as the quality of maintenance." Details the maintenance history of racecourses, stating that "early racecourses were developed on natural turf, mostly on free-draining soils which supported the fine-leaved fescue and bent grasses, now only found on the margins of most tracks." Discusses the use of drainage systems to "improve reliabilty and reduce damage during the winter months." Concludes that "it will always be difficult to produce consistency and specified going on natural turf and terrain when compared to a constructed soil profile given the vagaries of the weather during the period from the autumn through to the spring...whilst racecourses and clerks, groundsmen, and agronomists with the assistance of research findings can undoubtedly make improvements to the quality of the racing turf, the suitability of the ground for racing a particular horse must surely remain the responsibility of the horse's trainer." |
