Abstract/Contents:Discusses the construction of a chemical storage facility on a golf course. States that "a chemical storage facility is a proper way to manage all hazardous materials by containing them in a single area, limiting environmental and public exposure and minimizing potential spills." Lists key factors to take into account when building a storage facility, including "the building must be isolated from children, livestock and areas where human food or animal feed is stored; sites where there is any chance that run-off or drainage water from chemicals may enter surface or groundwater and any flood areas must be avoided; and the area must have a floor that does not allow seepage such as concrete or asphalt." Also states that "the foundation must be built to code and also fit the specifications in the overall site plan as approved by the municipality or region where the building is being constructed." Also details construction of the interior structure of the facility, stating that "all buildings must have a slanted floor with a drain to a containment tank that can be pumped out and reused if necessary; the storage area must have a 203-mm [millimeter] (8-in.) containment curb built to contain any chemical spills; the storage area must be well ventilated with windows or a fan system...the storage area must also be properly insulated to ensure the temperature remains above freezing and does not impact the physical properties of the chemicals and or pesticides; and employees working in the storage area must follow guidelines on proper storage procedures as outlined in the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)." Concludes that "as with any building, specific material warranties are available along with the builder's guarantees. In the commercial sector, there is no homebuilder warranty program but most builders will stand behind what they have built."
