Abstract/Contents:Discusses eliminating black flies and mosquitoes on golf courses. States that "these pests - black flies and mosquitoes - are not only an annoying distraction to golfers, but they are also a potential health hazard." Suggests eliminating black fly larvae, stating that "while larvicides are an option, the best prevention techniques are non-chemical in nature." Also suggests "for personal, day-to-day protection from black flies, you should wear light-coloured clothing on the green" and use insect repellants. Also suggests eliminating larvae as a possible way to control mosquitoes. States that "pest management professionals most often use the naturally occuring bacterium called bacillus thuringiensis, in particular the subspecies, israelenis (Bti)...to eliminate mosquito larvae." Also states that "while it is important to eliminate black flies and mosquitoes on golf courses because of the nuisance and health threat they pose, course management and pest management professionals need not do so at the expense of the environment." Concludes that "if you think you may already have a problem with black flies or mosquitoes, or want to prevent one before it happens, consult a pest management professional regarding the exact course of action you should take."
