| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses golf course maintenance trends and the relationship between the golf course superintendent and the board of directors. States that "the direction of the club is the responsibility of the club officers and board of directors. Communicating that direction to the superintendent is normally the responsibility of the green chairman or general manager, and is ideally presented in a job description and set of maintenance guidelines and that both parties can agree on, with an appropriate budget established. This procedure sets the direction, and the appropriate level of maintenance is identified." Also states that "in a long tenure, a superintendent will deal with many different chairmen and boards. If a new board wants to change the direction, the level of maintenance and budget must be altered accordingly." Mentions potential issues that may be caused by an increased maintenance budget, including increased maintenance of increasingly irrigated fairways and topdressing fairways and approaches "at a substantial cost." Concludes that "the solution is more about realistic expectations and good communication that directions and levels." |
