Abstract/Contents:Announces proposed phosphorus bans in Wayne, New Jersey and Lake Oswego, Oregon, following previous bans in Ann Arbor, Michigan; Bellingham, Washington; Madison, Wisconsin; and Minnesota. States that "phosphorus runoff in rivers and lakes promotes the growth of insidious algae blooms, which in turn, deplete oxygen from the water. The lack of oxygen spells death for fish and plants." Also states that the soil will need more nutrients if phosphorus is banned. Presents several different superintendents' views on the proposed phosphorus ban including Charlie Fultz of The Shenvalee Golf Resort in New Market, Virginia, and John O'Keefe of the Preakness Hills Country Club in Wayne Township, New Jersey. Notes that a phosphorus ban may "result in more nutrient leaching into water sources because there aren't enough root systems to take up those nutrients...[and] from an economic standpoint there is not much difference in the cost of fertilizer with or without phosphorus." Mentions a proposed ordinance in Wayne, New Jersey "that would ban the use of phosphorus fertilizers in the city." States that "the Department of Environmental Protection said 80 percent of their tests on New Jersey soil proves there is an overabundance of phosphorus in the soil." Concludes that "the ordinances have common language that says you can use phosphorus once you have a soil test that demonstrates you need it to maintain the health of the turf."
