Abstract/Contents:Suggests that the results of a Golf Digest survey indicating course conditioning as the number one preference for golfers, may be inaccurate. Notes causes of uncertainty including the population sampled stating that "the study focused on core golfers, the definition of which has been fluid in recent years. A few years ago, core golfers were a hybrid of frequent players and private club memembers...[and] by 2005 that definition has been broadened to include all golfers playing eight or more rounds per year." States that "proximity, price and value, and accessibility anchor nearly every choice of golf venue" and suggests that "interpreting the results of the study in question to mean 'conditioning trumps all' is ill-advised." Mentions another instance of misinterpreted results in the late 1980s when the National Golf Foundation published research where "its claim that 'there are 42 individuals who either want to play or play more golf' became 'there are 42 million nongolfers who want to join the game.'" Supports carefully analyzing studies and concludes "let's be responsible and pledge not to make the 'course conditioning is No. 1' mantra the next example of good research gone bad for public relations or politics."
