Abstract/Contents: | Describes the conditions at Winged Foot-West, where the United States (U.S.) Open will be held stating "this year(2006), fairways are 7 yards narrower and the greens are rolling a full foot faster on the Stimpmeter." Mentions previous majors held at Winged Foot including 1929, '59, '74, and '84, highlighting 1974's tough conditions with "rough so brutal and the greens so baked." Details improvements being made by superintendent Eric Greytok and architect Tom Fazio stating that "several hundred trees have been removed, the bulk of them nuisance conifers. Bunkers have been deepened...[and] the bentgrass/Poa annua green surfaces also have been reclaimed." Also details changes made in the rough including "a 6-foot-wide band that's 1½-inches deep; a 20-foot-wide band that's 3 to 3½ -inches deep and a peripheral band of far rough that could be 5-6 inches deep." Emphasizes the steep putting surfaces. Lists all holes numerically and includes par, yardage, and name of each. |
