| Question: | "We have to undertake the excavation and relaying of a bowling green for a local authority. The specification calls for a pre-treated meadow turf of which we are forwarding you a sample. Would you inspect the turf and make recommendations on treatment to bring it up to the standard required." |

| Answer/Response: | "We have received the sample of turf which you envisage being prepared for relaying a bowling green. We regret that in our opinion the turf is entirely unsatisfactory for the purpose and it cannot reasonably be brought up to standard except by ploughing up and reseeding. The main constituent of the turf is perennial ryegrass and there is a lot of Yorkshire fog in it. Other grasses include smooth stalked meadow grass, rough stalked meadow grass and a little creeping bent. Weeds include sedge, sorrel, buttercup, clover and moss." |
