Question:"Our greens have responded well to the recommended treatment which has been applied apart from the final top dressing. This will go on during the next two weeks. Perhaps you could advise us what to do for this final application. We have no compost but thought of using seaside sand mixed with some garden soil. There is also a quantity of old grass clippings which have weathered down for several years."
Answer/Response:"We were pleased to know that the treatments we recommended have proved beneficial. We assume from your letter that the top dressing you speak of is one of compost and not fertilizer. It is now getting rather too late (by the time you are ready) to apply the latter. The compost top dressing could be made up from screened top soil, sand and fine peat and it would best be applied after you have spiked your greens. The application should be made at 2 to 6 lb. per sq. yd., the heaviest dressings being given to the greens with the bumpiest surfaces. If you care to send us a sample of the soil you have we would be pleased to advise the amount of sand and peat that should be mixed with it."
