Question:"For some time it has been felt that our greens are too soft and we have decided to try a course of treatment to harden the surfaces. We have noticed that some neighbouring clubs apply a coarse type of sandstone grit and we feel this might be the answer to our problem. Would you advise us on this point and on the problem generally?"
Answer/Response:"Softness of greens is sometimes due to the development of too much fibre near the surface which tends to hold moisture, leads to shallow root development and is soft and squelchy in wet weather. The right treatment is to try to reduce the fibre and we have found powered scarification to be most helpful. The other method of hardening the greens is to use sand but this will not get to the basis of the trouble. Occasional sand dressing could be made at the rate of up to 3 lb. per sq. yd. and each one should be brushed in. A sample of what you intend to use should be submitted for examination."
