| Question: | "We have sent you a sample of a compost which we have purchased locally and it is merely described as "Sterilized Compost". It is our impression that the compost's origin is garbage and possibly sewage. We would like to know the chemical analysis of this, i.e. its nitrogen and lime content. To give you some background information we have used dried sewage on our fairways but this is anything but clean. We wonder if this new material is more satisfactory." |

| Answer/Response: | "We have completed an analysis of the compost and find that it is alkaline in reaction and contains 24% moisture. Loss on ignition, which may be taken as the organic matter, is 26%. The nitrogen percentage of the dry matter is 0.7%. The compost material should be regarded as low in plant foods but quite bulky as top dressing material. We think the compost is derived from garbage and possibly sewage as on sieving there are a number of pieces of glass, small stones and cinders. Whether the material is sterilized or not we cannot say. We think the compost would be quite useful for top dressing fairways applied at the rate of some 2 tons per acre and well harrowed in." |
