Question:"We are thinking of using a proprietary brand of seaweed meal which is sold as a soil conditioner with a view to improving our sticky, wet fairways. Do you think this material would prove more satisfactory than the sulphur we have used on your recommendation with good results?"
Answer/Response:"Trials with similar materials have been carried out at the Research Station. We think it is quite wrong to expect the soil conditioner to act in anything like the same way as sulphur on your moisture retentive fairways. Sulphur actually flocculates the clay particles in the soil and at the same time makes it more acid. The combined effect of sulphur is improved surface drainage and the growth of finer, more fibrous turf due to the acidity. We would suggest you continue to use sulphur where the soil's fertility allows as it would certainly do more good and cost less than the soil conditioner."
