Question:"My Committee have discussed the laying of water to the greens on our course. My instructions are to find out the possible cost so that the members of the Club can discuss the matter at their annual general meeting. It occurs to me that you might be able to provide some information on this matter and on the amount of water our greens would require."
Answer/Response:"We were interested to hear that your Club is considering having water laid on to the course as it would be found most valuable. Unfortunately we cannot give you all the information you require. The laying of water supplies is rather specialized work and the cost varies according to what is required. You will understand this when you consider the pattern of a watering system. The size of the pipes and layout differ from one course to another according to the land's shape and contours, the position of the supply and whether it is derived from a river, or a well or from the mains. A firm of water engineers would help you consider these points. Regarding the amount of water, we find that up to 4 to 5 gal. per sq. yd. per week applied in two to three applications is needed to sustain satisfactory grass growth during prolonged dry periods. It is desirable that the watering system be designed to efficiently operate at least 4 to 6 sprinklers at one time. You should remember that a water pressure of at least 30 to 40 lb. per sq. in. is needed for most modern sprinklers."
